10/7/25 ~ How to breathe more effectively

We all know how to breathe, don’t we? The air goes in and the air comes out.

But if we really breathe, breathing deeply and fully, we can encourage positive changes in our body.

We always feel as if we need to be busy, rushing from this place to that, and a lot of the time most people are probably breathing quite shallow.

Regular shallow breathing can actually activate the sympathetic nervous system (or ‘fight and flight’ response). This can contribute to an increased heart rate, muscle tension and feelings of anxiety.

By slowing down and taking time for ourselves and concentrating on breathing with our abdomen, we can improve oxygenation of the blood, leading to better delivery of nutrients to our body’s tissues.

This is something we teach in both our Tai Chi and meditation classes.

Other benefits of deep, calm breathing includes:

  • Helping to stimulate the function of our brain cells
  • Relaxes the nervous system and lowers our heart rate.
  • Increases alertness, awareness and calmness
  • Supports the effective renewal of red blood cells

And much more…

So take a moment for yourself, pause, and breathe!
